As an active partner of your child’s education team, we recognize that you will be better equipped to support your child’s learning at home if you know exactly what is being taught in the classroom, and why these skills are important for your child’s future. Here are some descriptions of learning areas that your child will be working on this year.
Rote Counting
Rote counting assesses your child’s ability to count numbers in the correct order up to 30. Example: The teacher asks the child to count as high as they can. The child says “1, 2, 3…11.”
Shape Naming
Shape Naming assesses your child’s ability to name basic shapes. Example: A triangle appears on the screen. The child says “triangle.”
Number Discrimination
Number Discrimination assesses your child’s ability to recognize a number when it is among other symbols. Example: Different boxes appear on the screen One box has a triangle, one box has the letter b, one box has 5. The teacher asks the child to point to the number. The child points to the 5.
Number Naming
Number Naming assesses your child’s ability to name numbers. Example: 5 is shown on the screen. The child says “five.”
Shape Discrimination
Shape Discrimination assesses your child’s ability to recognize a shape when it is among other shapes. Example: Several shapes appear on the screen in different sizes. The teacher asks the child to point to all the rectangles. The child points to all the rectangles.
Counting Sets
Counting Sets assesses your child’s ability to count a group of items and then say how many there are all together. Example: Five ducks appear on the screen. The teacher asks the child to count the ducks and tell how many there are all together. The child counts the ducks and says “five.”
Operations
Operations assesses your child’s ability to figure out basic addition and subtraction using pictures. Example: Five frogs appear on the screen. The teacher asks the child how many would be left if one frog is taken away. The child says “four.”
